Hydrogen tractor from MIP: homologated and ready to go

From idea to homologated product

The hydrogen tractor – until recently it sounded like science fiction. But today it is a reality. The first hydrogen tractor to be homologated under strict EU regulations comes from Slovakia.

This project shows that sustainable heavy transport is not the music of the future – but part of the practice.

MIP decided to bring to the market a solution that combines low emissions, performance and practical usability. Our goal was to create a hydrogen tractor that is not just a technological concept, but a real usable vehicle. With the help of partners such as Ford Trucks, Durapower and Eaton have succeeded.

How does our hydrogen tractor work?

The M&I RH120R is based on the Ford F-MAX platform and uses the latest technology in a single unit:

  • ▪️Hydrogen range: 600-750 km
  • ▪️Battery range: up to 120 km
  • ▪️Performance 540 kW (734 hp)
  • ▪️Torque: 2500 Nm
  • ▪️Electric motor: DANA TM4 Sumo HV 2500
  • ▪️Transmission: 4-speed Eaton heavy-duty
  • ▪️Fuel cell: Refire Prisma XII+ (117 kW)
  • ▪️Battery: Durapower (122 kWh)
  • ▪️Hydrogen tanks: 4×12 kg (NPROXX 700 bar)
  • ▪️Weight: homologated 45 tonnes

The vehicle has been independently tested and certified by TÜV SÜD.

Designed for real-world use

Unlike many prototypes, this hydrogen tractor is designed to fit into the existing infrastructure of transport companies.

The position of the fifth wheel is compatible with standard ISO trailers (non-mega), which simplifies the transition from diesel vehicles.

Thus, the transition to zero-emission transport does not require major fleet modifications.

First partners Metrans and Waberer’s

Already during the presentation, two important players signed a memorandum of understanding for testing: Metrans a Waberer’s.

Their goal? To test the hydrogen tractor in real logistical conditions and prepare for a zero-emission future.

Why choose MIP as a partner?

MIP is not just a manufacturer. We are a system integrator that designs tailor-made solutions – from the first sketch, through development, to homologation.

More about our approach can be found in the section on system integration or read the case study of our hydrogen bus.

Conclusion: hydrogen is a reality

MIP’s hydrogen tractor is proof that sustainable transport is not just an ambition. It is a technically manageable, powerful and homologated reality.

If your company is looking for a solution for the future of logistics, we will be happy to custom design it for you.
